When considering light facial treatments, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are two of the most popular options available. They are similar, but there are some separate benefits and drawbacks to consider when making your choice!
Microdermabrasion: A light cosmetic procedure to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells using a diamond tip suction wand. It aids in reducing the appearance of large pores and fine lines. It requires no downtime and can be combined with facials, peels, and sheet masks. Its not for those with rosacea, broken capillaries, excessively dry or thin skin or severe acne.
Dermaplaning: An exfoliation performed with a sterile scalpel held at a 45 degree angle and lightly passed over the skin in a scraping motion. It removes layers of dead skin building along with "peach fuzz" from the face. It leaves a beautifully smooth skin surface and aids in the penetration of products and serums. It requires no downtime and can be combined with facials, peels and sheet masks. Good for most skin types, but not well suited for deep lines or skin with irregular texture. Also not ideal for severe acne as it can spread bacteria present in blemishes.
Which one is right for you? These skin care treatments have a lot in common. Both resurface skin and speed up cell turnover leading to smoother, younger looking skin. Both require regular treatments for best results, both can be combined with other services for better results, and neither requires any down time. That said, dermaplaning is more aggressive than microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is more of a maintenance treatment while dermaplaning is for correcting existing problems.
In short if you're looking for a preventative or maintenance facial and you do not have rosacea or broken capillaries microdermabrasion would be a nice treatment for you. If you want a more significant exfoliation and a safer facial treatment option (no suction) dermaplaning would be the better choice. With either treatment, we always recommend an enzyme treatment and/or a sheet mask to enhance the results! Several of our facials contain these treatments, 90 minute service choices are recommended for dermaplaning.
